Mac sales in Japan (Oct 25-31)
Nov 11, 1999
Mac Sales in Japan for the period Oct 25-31 — Macs retained the top 3 spots and 8 places among the top 15 computers sold in Japan with 25.7% overall market share for the week.
A point worth noting is that the iMac DV SE is the hottest-selling personal computer in Japan today, and has remained at the #1 spot throughout since its Oct 16 launch. It also means that the iMac DV SE led October sales despite giving the competition a 2-week headstart. As was previously reported, Apple's aggregated market share for the month of October 1999 was 24.2%, according to BCN Soken's market research unit.

In the third weekend since Oct 16, Apple's iMac DV Special Edition continues to lead the rankings with 6.88% market share as Macs retained 4 of the top 10 places in desktop sales as follows:
| Desktop Computer Sales | ||

Mac sales in Japan (Oct 18-24)

About that pie-chart
Nov 3, 1999
Well, I asked and you delivered. Thanks to all who wrote in to offer the proper translation of the pie-chart below. In particular, I would like to feature this reply from Heeday Danjo, who gave me even more revealing information about how BCN's data had been collected:
Hi, the chart you asked for clarification tells the following story:
Title:
Personal Computer Market Share by Manufacturers
Period:
Oct 11-17, 1999
1. Apple : 29.8%
2. NEC : 18.5%
3. Sony: 16.7%
4. Fujitsu : 10.2%
5. IBM Japan : 7.6%
6. Others : 17.2%BCN states it takes the POS (Point of Sales) data of 284 major retail shops of 9 chains to tell which model sold for how much during that period. So, while not a comprehensive measure, it should be indicative of the general trend. The iMac DV Special Edition earned 2nd place in (just) 2 days of its first week, no wonder it is top this weekend ;-)

Mac sales in Japan (Oct 23-24) — Mac sales in Japan remain strong
Oct 26, 1999
FOR THE SECOND WEEKEND after the Oct 16 launch of the iBook and the new iMacs in Japan, Macintosh sales remain strong. Business Computer News today issued its update on sales rankings for the weekending Oct 23-24. In desktop sales, Macintosh computers retained the top three places with the iMac DV Special Edition taking top spot with 7.57% market share:
| Desktop Computers | ||
|---|---|---|
| Position | Model | Market share |
| 1st | iMac DV SE 400MHz | 7.57% |
| 2nd | iMac Blueberry 333MHz | 5.69% |
| 3rd | PowerMac G4 400MHz | 5.59% |
| 6th | iMac DV Grape 400MHz | 2.87% |
| 9th | iMac DV Strawberry 400MHz | 2.14% |
| T O T A L | 23.9% | |
It is worth noting that the rest of the top 10 rankings in desktop computer sales were all occupied by Japanese models, namely NEC, Sony, and Sotec. (Also, do not rule out the possibility that initial stocks may have run out for the other iMac flavors.) While percentage of market share generally declined for the iMac during the period, the PowerMac G4 400MHz gained slightly in market share from the previous week's figure of 4.1%.
As for notebook computer sales, iBook demand leveled off at 8th and 9th positions with reduced market share. (Remember again that Apple Japan did warn consumers that supplies of iBooks would be constrained initially.) As with the desktop rankings, the remaining positions in the top 10 were dominated by Japanese products NEC's LaVie NX and Sony's VAIO series:
| Notebook Computers | ||
|---|---|---|
| Position | Model | Market share |
| 8th | iBook Blueberry 300MHz | 2.84% |
| 9th | iBook Tangerine 300MHz | 2.73% |
| T O T A L | 5.57% | |
Mac sales in Japan (Oct 11-17)
Oct 29, 1999
HERE ARE THE PARTIAL RESULTS of the computer sales figures consolidated by Business Computer News for the period Oct 11-17. Macs took 6 of the top 15 places in the ranking by Business Computer News as follows:
| Desktop & Notebook Computer Sales | ||
|---|---|---|
| Position | Model | Market share |
| 1st | iMac Blueberry 333MHz | 3.74% |
| 2nd | iMac DV SE 400MHz | 3.01% |
| 3rd | PowerMac G4 400MHz | 2.88% |
| 6th | iBook Blueberry 300MHz | 2.52% |
| 9th | iMac DV Tangerine 400MHz | 2.21% |
| 15th | iMac DV Blueberry 400MHz | 1.53% |
You can study the original chart here. From these figures and the market share results of the subsequent weekend of Oct 23-24 (below), it can be surmised that stocks of the tangerine and blueberry iMac DVs were probably depleted within the first weekend, and therefore abruptly disappeared from the top 10 rankings just a week after accounting for almost 11% market share between them. The base model blueberry iMac 350MHz has not appeared at all, but there were some reports earlier that stocks would not be available in Japan for awhile.
BCN also produced the accompanying pie chart above for the same period, which I couldn't decipher except for the fact that Apple Computer occupies the largest segment of it at 29.8 percent. Can anyone make it out?
Macs outsell all other computers in Japan
Oct 21, 1999
BUSINESS COMPUTER NEWS issued a report showing that Macs had swept all top 10 positions in desktop computer sales in Japan during the iMac/iBook launch last weekend. Leading the pack was the Blueberry iMac 333MHz (selling at US$920), with the iMac DV Special Edition in second place:
| Desktop Computers | ||
|---|---|---|
| Position | Model | Percentage |
| 1st | iMac Blueberry 333MHz | 10.16% |
| 2nd | iMac DV SE 400MHz | 8.48% |
| 3rd | iMac DV Tangerine 400MHz | 6.24% |
| 4th | iMac DV Blueberry 400MHz | 4.31% |
| 5th | PowerMac G4 400MHz | 4.10% |
| 6th | iMac DV Lime 400MHz | 3.90% |
| 7th | iMac Tangerine 333MHz | 3.43% |
| 8th | iMac DV Grape 400MHz | 3.41% |
| 9th | iMac DV Strawberry 400MHz | 3.14% |
| 10th | iMac Grape 333MHz | 2.98% |
| T O T A L | 50.2% | |
Another first is that Apple desktop products alone accounted for over 50 percent of the market share in Japan in the same week. (Thanks to Jimmie Jenkins who wrote in from Ashiya, Japan with the arithmetic correction.) The iBook (blueberry and tangerine combined) accounted for 12 percent of all notebook computers sold in its first weekend alone, with the blueberry model in 1st position and the tangerine 6th. The PowerBook G3 333MHz took the 7th spot:
| Notebook Computers | ||
|---|---|---|
| Position | Model | Percentage |
| 1st | iBook Blueberry 300MHz | 8.13% |
| 6th | iBook Tangerine 300MHz | 3.89% |
| 7th | PowerBook G3 333MHz | 3.74% |
| T O T A L | 15.76% | |
Many thanks to Yuji Tai of Japan Apple Watch for the lead.
