iMacs to ship in Taiwan with up to 20 free Chinese software titles

May 31, 1999

APPLE COMPUTER has taken another important step in penetrating into the Taiwanese market with its colorful iMac. Following news reports that the company had outsourced the manufacture of its forthcoming and as-yet-unnamed portable consumer product to Taiwanese company Alpha Top with production to begin in June, it has recently been reported that Apple will ship the iMac with as many as 20 free Chinese-language software programs in Taiwan. A recent Business Times report read:

"Apple Computer Inc said it will begin including 20 Chinese-language software programs with its iMac computer in Taiwan, hoping to carve out a larger share of the island's US$256 million (S$440 million) personal computer market."

The report adds that Apple hopes to double its market share in Taiwan from its present 4 per cent to 8 within the next three years through this project, according to Alan Chang, managing director for Apple's operations in Taiwan and Korea. "There's a huge potential in sales, growing at least 20 per cent a year." Excluding Japan, Asia accounted for only about 5 per cent of Apple's global sales last year.

Among the 12 software companies involved in this venture is notably Adobe Systems Inc., and Apple hopes the new software package will help it compete against entrenched domestic computer makers like Acer Inc, the dominant PC seller, and foreign producers like Compaq Computer Inc.
